2019-2020
Please note that this page was written three years after Skystone ended, so there may be limited information and photos. Due to this, there may be slight inaccuracies with certain details. Thank you for understanding!
Skystone was our first year as a team, and at the time our name was SWAT Bots Black. Along with another team, #16596 ATA (currently CIA), we were the newest FTC teams in our organization. #10015 SWAT Bots Red (currently Hyper Droid) was the most experienced team in our organization, with their rookie year being in 2015, so they played a large role in teaching us how FTC works.
We participated in four different competitions including the Alberta Championship where we were the second pick on the winning alliance. Overall we were very happy with our performance as a team, especially since it was our rookie year.
This was our very first competition, and we were super excited to see all of our hard work pay off.
We had three wins and two losses, and ended in qualification rank four (which we were very happy about).
This competition we had four wins and two losses, and ended in qualification rank three. Again, we were very happy with our placement.
At this competition, we had to cut our capstone down and cover it in duct tape because it was slightly too long, so we learned an important lesson about making sure everything met the size requirements.
At this competition, we had three wins and two losses, and ended up in qualification rank five. We learned more about scouting other teams, including what questions to ask and how to keep track of scouting information.
Unfortunately, we do not have any pictures from this event.
We were very excited to participate in our first provincial competition. We had an excellent time meeting other teams and seeing everything the competition had to offer. During the qualifications, we had three wins and two losses, and ended in qualification rank ninth.
Then during elimination we were chosen as the second pick on the first seed alliance, consisting of team #10015 SWAT Bots Red as the captain, and team #10544 Cyber Eagles as the first pick. After winning every match in the semifinals and finals, we were crowned as the winning alliance!
We were overjoyed, and super happy with our performance for our first ever season. We were also very excited for SWAT Bots Red, one of the teams from our organization, since they were given a ticket to worlds. Unfortunately, just a few weeks after this, Covid-19 restrictions started, and they were unable to go.
This season, our robot was named Froge because we though it looked like a frog when its intake was in starting position. Froge's main function this season was to transport stones quickly with a two wheel intake system. The intake system was able to rotate vertically allowing it to place blocks on the foundation and move the foundation by hooking the smaller intake wheels onto the foundation.
There is a two wheel intake system at the front of Froge. Each wheel is attached to an arm which is able to rotate slightly in order to form the perfect fit around the stone, even if Froge doesn't approach it head on. This allowed for a quick and efficient system of transporting stones.
The whole intake is attached to a motor which is able to rotate the mechanism up and down. This allows Froge to place stones on the foundation and move the foundation by lifting and hooking its intake wheels onto the foundation.
The small wheels located underneath the intake wheels to allow Froge to securely grip the foundation and easily move it.
Froge's drive train is made up of four mecanum wheels. These allow for greater precision during autonomous and better manoeuvrability in general.
There are two colour sensors and two distance sensors on the front of Froge. These help detect skystones during autonomous.
Froge was built to be much shorter than the maximum robot height. This allows it to easily drive under the alliance bridges with no problems.
Our team consisted of six students and two mentors in our first year. Everyone on the team was new to FTC, including both of our mentors, but some team members had prior experience with FLL.
This was Emily's first year in FTC, but she had been doing FLL for three years before this with Anusha and Bryson. She was in Grade 8 at the time. Her main role on the team was a builder, logbook writer, and part-time driver.

This was Sean's first year in FTC. He was in Grade 9 at the time. His main role on the team was a driver and builder.
This was Caitlin's first year as a mentor with FTC. She has a mechanical engineering background. She enjoys working with kids, and loves the competitive and learning atmosphere of FIRST.
This was Chris' first year as a mentor with FTC. He has a mechanical engineering background as well as a masters in engineering. He loves the technical components of FIRST including programming, CAD, and building
For our first year, our name and logo were chosen for us by our organization. We were called SWAT Bots Black, to go with another FTC team in our organization, SWAT Bots Red. Our shirt colour matched our respective team colours - black shirt for SWAT Bots Black, red shirt for SWAT Bots Red.
